| The
shell of the mussels has two similar and triangular valves. They are black
with blue shades and their shell is smooth with concentric lines. They have been produced in Galicia for more than 40 years and there are more than 3,000 beds in the Galician coasts, specially in the rķas Arousa, Vigo, Pontevedra, Muros and Ares. Its consumption has increased in Galicia, but more mussels are consumed out of Galicia than inside. A significant fact is that the 40% of the world-wide production of mussels is Galician. Mussels are not captured but cultivated in the beds, so they are the most copious mollusk in the Galician coasts. The most traditional way of eating them is by steam or adding a little water to allow the mussels to be cooked in their own one. |
